- Renewable and certified materials: FSC-certified timber, renewable bamboo, low-formaldehyde MDF and plywood introduce responsible attributes at the source;
- Water-based and low-VOC coating systems: compared with conventional solvent-based paint, water-based coatings and UV-cured systems can maintain finish performance while significantly reducing impact on the production environment and in-store air quality;
- Recyclable metal substrates: stainless steel, galvanized sheet and aluminum retain significant recycling value as production scrap when an effective recovery system is in place.
Material selection is not a matter of choosing the option with the strongest environmental claim; it requires a balance among brand expression, quality, cost and environmental performance.
3. Process Optimization: Small Actions That Reduce Waste
If material selection is about using the right material, process optimization is about not wasting it.
Several seemingly modest practices in BESTWAY’s production can significantly reduce material loss over time:
- Digital nesting and layout: CAD/CAM software optimizes sheet layouts to reduce avoidable offcuts before production begins;
- Graded reuse of offcuts: offcuts are sorted by size so reusable pieces return to production and the remainder enters the recycling stream;
- Classification of trial-production samples: samples are classified as saleable, reusable spare parts or recyclable material instead of being discarded after the trial;
- Preference for standard and common components: standard connectors and common structural components are selected during design to simplify future replacement and maintenance.
None of these actions is dramatic on its own, but together they can materially improve annual material utilization.
4. Reusable Structures: Extending Fixture Service Life
The most advanced level of sustainability is designing the fixture itself for repeated use.
Modular design is the foundation. When a display is divided into independently replaceable modules, store upgrades, relocations and seasonal changes require only selected components to be replaced while the main structure remains in service.
Modular design provides two benefits:
- For brand clients: lower upgrade costs, shorter renovation schedules and greater flexibility when refreshing brand presentation;
- For the environment: higher material reuse, less waste and the ability to redeploy materials across projects.
